The Federal Office of Head Start (OHS)—part of the Administration for Children and Families (ACF) of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services—contracts with us to provide expert knowledge and technical assistance to Head Start early childhood programs.
Head Start programs provide comprehensive child development services to economically disadvantaged children and families from birth to age five, with a special focus on helping preschoolers develop the early reading and math skills they need to be successful in school. In addition, Head Start programs work with families to help them understand and meet their children's health, nutritional, dental, and social emotional needs. Head Start federally funded programs are operated throughout the United States through grants to local public and private non-profit and for-profit agencies.
We support Head Start programs in two ways: 1) through our work with Head Start grantees in Massachusetts, Vermont, New Hampshire, and Connecticut in the area of early childhood education training; and 2) by providing technical assistance in grantee performance management to Head Start agencies in all six New England States.
Early Childhood Education
Our highly trained early childhood specialists provide assistance to Head Start and Early Head Start grantees in Massachusetts, Vermont, New Hampshire, and Connecticut around issues of school readiness and the provision of training and career development needs of staff. Among other related services, we develop and implement effective mentoring and coaching strategies designed to improve teacher performance, classroom quality, outcomes for children, strategies to engage families in their children’s education, and promote successful home-school partnerships.
Grantee Technical Assistance
Working closely with the Region 1 office of the Administration for Families and Children, our Grantee Specialists assist Head Start Grantees with program and management deficiencies identified through the federal monitoring process, Risk Management meetings, or the Program Information Report, and also provide assistance to develop a Quality Improvement Plan (QIP).
