WAMC: Study addresses manufacturing climate in Berkshires

WAMC Northeast Public Radio covered the release of a recent report completed by the Economic and Public Policy Research group at the UMass Donahue Institute looking at the potential for growth of advanced manufacturing in the Berkshire region of Massachusetts.

The study tracked trends in manufacturing jobs dating back 30 years, when the sector supplied more than 40 percent of Berkshire County’s employment base. The departure of General Electric from Pittsfield by the early 1990s took more than half of the sector’s jobs in the region. In the last five years, more than 18 manufacturing companies closed, taking an additional 2,700 jobs. Business leaders and government representatives attended the formal release of the report and gave feedback on the obstacles to growth, possible investment sources and strategies for workforce development.
