UMass Donahue Institute’s defense study cited in Worcester Business Journal

A UMass Donahue Institute study shows that Massachusetts ranked 8th nationally in the amount of funding received from the U.S. Department of Defense and the Department of Homeland Security with $14.7 billion in contracts in 2005.

According to the study, Massachusetts was first in the country in defense-related Small Business Technology Transfer awards and second in Small Business Innovation Research awards.  These awards are an indication of Massachusetts’ technology and innovation leadership.

The defense industry is responsible for more than 4.5 percent of Massachusetts GDP.

The defense sector also directly employed 32,240 employees and supported an additional 39,187 jobs.
